Hearing Report: Senator Mullin’s Nomination to be DHS Secretary Advances to Full Senate

March 19, 2026

This morning, the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee favorably advanced Senator Markwayne Mullin’s nomination to be the next Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security to the full Senate floor for consideration. Yesterday, Mullin had a somewhat contentious hearing with the Committee. This morning, some Senators once again raised concerns about his temperament before the vote. Both Chair Rand Paul (R-KY) and Ranking Member Gary Peters (D-MI) voted no, but Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) voted yes, which permitted his nomination to advance (8-7).

With widespread support from Senate Republicans, it is expected that Mullin will be confirmed by the full Senate, as early as next week.
